The inaugural Project Management Institute (PMI) Chapter Conference was held at Cresta Lodge, Gaborone, from 4th-5th September 2025 under theme, “Driving Economic Development Through Projects.”
Botswana Oil Limited (BOL) as the National Oil Company is mandated to ensure security and efficiency of supply of petroleum products, to manage strategic reserves and stocks and facilitate meaningful participation of citizen owned companies in the country.
To fulfil its mandate, the company established a Project Management Office within the Operations business unit and developed structured project management frameworks for effective infrastructure development and management of strategic projects.
Speaking on the topic “Project Governance & Policy for Economic Growth,” Mr. Kabelo Lanka, Senior Manager – Project Management Office, Mr. Kabelo Lanka, stressed on the role of well-designed, well-managed projects in stimulating innovation, creating jobs, and delivering sustainable infrastructure.
He further emphasised that economic development is not only a policy goal but a direct outcome of effective project governance, calling for robust frameworks, ethical leadership, and agile execution of projects to address bureaucratic delays and enhance completion rates.
Drawing from global insights, Mr. Lanka highlighted the principles of sustainable project management, where both the process and the deliverables of projects contribute to long-term social, economic, and environmental impact.
He outlined solutions such as digital governance tools, streamlined approval systems, capacity building, and proactive stakeholder engagement to build investor confidence and accelerate national development.
